Choosing a camera lens cloth is not simply about softness. The material needs to be appropriate for optical use, the working area needs to remain clean, and loose contamination should be dealt with before contact cleaning.
The short answer
A camera lens cleaning cloth should be made for optical use, kept clean and used only after loose grit or abrasive debris has been removed. Cloth condition matters because fingerprints, oils and residue transfer into the fabric during cleaning. As one section becomes loaded, moving to a fresh working area can help avoid repeatedly redistributing the same contamination across the lens.
A suitable cloth is part of the cleaning routine — not a guarantee against scratches, coating wear or damage.

It is also important not to assume that every haze, smear or stubborn mark represents coating damage. In everyday use, fingerprints, skin oils and cleaning residue can simply be moved around rather than fully removed.

As fingerprints, oils and residue transfer into the fabric, a larger cloth gives you more opportunity to fold or rotate to a fresh section instead of continuing with the same contaminated area.

The clean-working-area principle
A cloth does not remain equally clean across its entire surface once it has been used. Oils, fingerprints and residue accumulate in the area doing the work.
Folding or rotating the cloth exposes fresh material and reduces the need to keep returning transferred contamination to the lens.

A lens that still looks cloudy, greasy or streaked after wiping may simply have contamination or residue remaining on the surface. Persistent marks can have different causes, so harder or repeated wiping is not automatically the correct response.
