For the sunglasses you reach for every day, choose a cloth with room to work—and a place to keep it clean.

The buying decision

What makes a good sunglasses cleaning cloth?

Choose a clean, washable microfibre cloth intended for optical lenses, with enough fabric to move to a fresh section as you work. Then follow the care instructions supplied with your sunglasses: the cloth is one part of the cleaning routine.

For a small case, a compact cloth may be convenient. If you prefer more material to hold and fold around your sunglasses, an oversized format gives you a larger working surface.

No cloth makes grit harmless. If your sunglasses carry sand, loose dust or stubborn residue, address that contamination using the lens maker’s recommended method before wiping.

More fabric. More clean sections.

A generous cloth for your everyday sunglasses.

Fingerprints and facial oils transfer onto the cloth during cleaning. A 43 × 30 cm format gives you more fabric to fold and rotate, rather than returning to the same used patch.

The practical difference is the amount of clean material available—not a promise that size alone guarantees better cleaning or prevents scratches.

Each cloth has stitched edges and its own pouch. Use the soft fabric face against the lens, keep it free of particles and allow it to dry fully before putting it away.

Sunglasses need their own care routine

From a light fingerprint to a day at the beach.

The right next step depends on what is on the lenses. Do not expect a dry cloth to deal with every kind of mark.

Everyday fingerprints

Where your manufacturer permits dry microfibre cleaning, use a clean section with gentle pressure for light marks on lenses free of loose particles. If a smear persists, stop and check the lenses and cloth rather than rubbing harder.

Sand, dust and salt

Do not rub visible grit across a lens. Follow your sunglasses maker’s instructions for removing particles and rinsing after saltwater exposure. Keep a beach-exposed cloth separate until it has been properly cleaned.

Sunscreen and heavier residue

A dry cloth may spread oily residue rather than remove it. Use the washing method or lens-cleaning product recommended for your particular sunglasses, then finish with clean microfibre where appropriate.

Manufacturer guidance matters: Maui Jim’s lens-care guidance covers rinsing, suitable soap, saltwater and cleaning-cloth care. Ray-Ban’s product-care advice specifies soft microfibre and appropriate cleaning products. Their instructions apply to their own eyewear; check the guidance for your particular lenses and frame.

Polarised, mirrored and coated lenses

Choose by care requirements, not lens colour.

A dark tint or polarised lens does not identify every coating or frame material involved. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions rather than assuming all sunglasses tolerate the same products.

A clean optical-grade microfibre cloth can form part of that routine where suitable. It does not replace rinsing when required, make a contaminated lens safe to rub, or remove existing scratches.

Barroccu & Co. cloths are intended for everyday care of suitable coated eyewear. If the lens maker specifies a particular cloth, cleaner or method, follow that advice.

The Three-Cloth Collection showing Ferns, Maple and Blossom of Colour with three individual storage pouches

The Three-Cloth Collection

One at home. One in your bag. One ready elsewhere.

For someone who likes a cloth in more than one place, the collection contains Ferns, Maple and Blossom of Colour: three 43 × 30 cm cloths, each with its own pouch.

Keep one with your sunglasses, another at home and another in the car—or rotate a clean cloth into use while one is being washed. Keep cloths clean and dry; store sunglasses in their own case, away from excessive heat.

A single cloth is the simpler choice if you only need one. The set offers three designs and separate storage for each.

A practical routine

Use the cloth as the finishing step—not a shortcut around grit.

  1. Check before wiping. Look for loose particles, sand and residue. Check that the cloth is clean too.
  2. Follow your sunglasses maker’s method. Rinse or use a suitable cleaner where instructed. Do not substitute an unapproved household product.
  3. Finish gently. Where appropriate, use the clean fabric face with light pressure. Fold or rotate to another section as it collects residue.
  4. Store and wash thoughtfully. Let the cloth dry before returning it to its pouch. Wash it when it collects oils or starts leaving smears.

Keep the cloth useful

Care for what touches your lenses.

A cloth left loose in a beach bag, pocket or car can collect particles. Its pouch gives it a separate place to live, but a pouch cannot clean an already contaminated cloth.

Follow the cloth’s washing instructions, avoid fabric softener, rinse thoroughly and let it dry fully before storage.

Sunglasses cloth questions

A few useful answers.

What is the best cloth for cleaning sunglasses?

Look for clean, washable microfibre intended for optical lenses, enough usable fabric to move to a fresh section, and storage that keeps it separate from loose debris. Match the cleaning routine to the sunglasses maker’s instructions. Barroccu & Co. offers an oversized 43 × 30 cm format with a pouch; a compact cloth may suit someone prioritising minimum case space.

Can I use microfibre on polarised sunglasses?

Many sunglasses manufacturers recommend a soft cleaning cloth, but follow the instructions for your particular lenses, coatings and frame. Polarisation alone does not establish which cleaners or methods are suitable. Never rub sand or grit across the lens.

Can I remove sunscreen or salt marks with a dry cloth?

Do not assume dry wiping is the right first step. Salt, particles and oily residues may require rinsing or an appropriate cleaner under the manufacturer’s instructions. Finish with a clean cloth where recommended.

Is a sunglasses cloth different from a glasses cloth?

The same suitable optical microfibre can often be used for prescription glasses and sunglasses. What changes is the care required by the particular lenses and the contamination present. Keep a beach-exposed or dirty cloth out of use until it has been cleaned.

Does every Barroccu & Co. cloth include a pouch?

Yes. Each individual cloth is supplied with a protective storage pouch. The Three-Cloth Collection includes three cloths and three individual pouches. A cloth pouch is not a protective case for your sunglasses.

How much are the cloths and the three-cloth set?

Individual designs are £24.99 each. The Three-Cloth Collection is £59.99 and includes Ferns, Maple and Blossom of Colour. UK delivery is complimentary. Sunglasses are not included.

Will a cleaning cloth remove scratches?

No. A cleaning cloth removes suitable surface residue as part of the recommended routine; it does not repair scratches or damaged coatings. Ask your optician or eyewear manufacturer about damaged lenses.
