The Only Cleaning Cloth You’ll Ever Need?
One good optical cloth can become the cloth you reach for every day — but no cleaning cloth should be presented as universally suitable for every surface or every type of lens coating.
Quick answer: for routine glasses and optical-lens care, a clean, washable microfibre cloth intended for optical use can cover many everyday cleaning needs. The surface manufacturer's own care instructions should always take priority where specific guidance is given.
One cloth or many?
Do you really need lots of different cleaning cloths?
For ordinary spectacle and optical-lens care, having a collection of small, forgotten cloths is not necessarily useful. What matters more is whether the cloth you use is appropriate for the surface, clean enough to use and cared for properly between cleans.
A generously sized optical microfibre cloth can become a practical everyday choice because there is more fabric available to fold and rotate as fingerprints and oils transfer onto it.
That does not mean one cloth can be assumed suitable for every material in your home. Screens, specialist coatings and other surfaces may have their own manufacturer cleaning instructions.

Fingerprints and skin oils move from the lens onto the cloth during cleaning. As an area of fabric is used, it is no longer as clean as it was at the start.
A larger cloth gives you more fabric to work with. It can be folded and rotated so another section is available rather than repeatedly using the same area.
Size alone does not prove that a cloth will clean better than another. Its practical advantage is simply providing more usable surface during a cleaning routine.

Keep it useful
The condition of the cloth matters.
Reusable cloths collect the fingerprints, skin oils and residue removed during cleaning.
If a cloth starts leaving smears, the cloth itself is therefore one of the things worth checking. Moving to an unused section or washing the cloth when required can be more useful than repeatedly wiping with the same contaminated area.
