Anti-Fog Cleaning Cloths for Glasses: What You Need to Know
Anti-fog cloths and ordinary microfibre cleaning cloths are not the same thing. Understanding that distinction matters when choosing how to care for prescription glasses, sunglasses and other eyewear.
Quick answer: an anti-fog cloth is generally designed to apply or distribute an anti-fog treatment. A standard optical microfibre cloth is used for routine cleaning. Always check the instructions for the particular anti-fog product and the eyewear or lens manufacturer before use.
Start with the distinction
Anti-fog treatment and routine lens cleaning are different jobs.
The term “anti-fog cloth” can make different products appear interchangeable when they are not. Before using one, it helps to establish whether the cloth contains or applies an anti-fog treatment, or whether it is simply a reusable microfibre cloth intended for cleaning.
Reusable microfibre cleaning cloth
A conventional optical microfibre cloth is used to remove fingerprints, oils and everyday residue. Unless specifically treated and sold for that purpose, it should not be assumed to provide anti-fog performance.
Important clarification
Barroccu & Co cloths are not anti-fog treated.
Our cloths are reusable optical-grade microfibre cleaning cloths. They do not contain an anti-fog treatment and we do not claim that wiping lenses with a Barroccu & Co cloth will prevent fogging.
Their purpose is routine optical cleaning: providing a large, reusable microfibre surface for removing fingerprints and everyday residue from suitable optical surfaces.
If you specifically require an anti-fog treatment, follow the instructions supplied with that product and check that it is appropriate for your particular eyewear and lens coatings.
Why fogging happens
Why do glasses fog up?
Fogging occurs when moisture condenses on a cooler lens surface. Everyday situations such as moving between different temperatures can therefore cause temporary condensation on eyewear.
Because fogging and ordinary dirt are different problems, cleaning a lens and treating it for fogging should not automatically be regarded as the same process.
A lens can be clean and still fog when conditions encourage condensation.
Before using an anti-fog product
Check the instructions rather than assuming universal compatibility.
Eyewear can use different lens materials, surface treatments and coatings. Anti-fog products can also differ in their formulation and method of application.
For that reason, broad claims that one anti-fog cloth is appropriate for every lens or coating should be treated cautiously.

Keep the processes distinct
Cleaning your lenses before considering anti-fog treatment
If you use a separate anti-fog product, do not assume that ordinary cleaning instructions and anti-fog application instructions are interchangeable. Follow the directions supplied with the products and eyewear you are actually using.

Check for loose debris
Avoid simply rubbing visible loose particles across a lens. Follow the cleaning guidance supplied for your eyewear.

Clean appropriately
Use a suitable clean cloth and any cleaning method recommended by the lens or eyewear manufacturer.

Use anti-fog products according to their own instructions
If you choose a separate anti-fog treatment, use it only as its manufacturer directs and on surfaces for which it is intended.

Do not assume the same care applies to both cloths
A reusable untreated microfibre cloth may be washable, while a separately treated anti-fog cloth may have different care instructions.
Cloth care
Keep an ordinary cleaning cloth clean between uses.
A reusable cleaning cloth gradually collects fingerprints, skin oils and other residue. It can also pick up debris when carried loose in a pocket, handbag or camera bag.

When a reusable cloth itself becomes dirty, clean it according to its care instructions rather than continuing to spread accumulated residue across the lens.
